Fluoride is a natural mineral that has been shown over the course of many years and studies to strengthen enamel. Toothe namel is composed of a mineral called hydroxyapatite ; when applied correctly Fluoride replaces the “hydroxy” and forms “fluorapatite”, which is a stronger mineral than hydroxyapatite, and thereby makes the enamel stronger. In this way, fluoride applications help prevent or slow dental decay. The American Academy of Dentistry recommends once or twice yearly applications of fluoride to teeth depending on the patient needs.
We are happy to discuss any concerns regarding fluoride with parents, and do offer alternative treatments, such as Nanohydroxyapatite.
