Dental decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth, which excrete acid that breaks down enamel. Without some form of treatment these areas grow larger as the bacteria multiply in those sites. Treatment can be non – invasive if the decay is noted very early and is still small; better brushing and flossing, using medicated toothpastes or rinses, and SDF applications can help remineralize small areas of dental decay. SDF is Silver Diamine Fluoride, which is gel applied to dental decay to stop decay, is generally applied to the affected tooth or teeth in 2 separate visits and can be very effective.
When decay is larger and needs treatment, we remove decay with a dental handpiece and restore the tooth with a composite “white” filling. Sometimes decay is very close or into the pulp of the tooth, and may require pulp treatment and a crown. We will discuss in detail any treatment your child needs and the options available.
